PARALLAX: Urban Design Competition // Graz // Public + Private
Urban Parallax is a complex spatial response to the new urban quarter of Lend in Graz, Austria. It creates a flexible-density within the site forming a new coherent grain to absorb diverse urban lifestyles. It integrates; the existing Helmut-List-Halle, restaurant and housing; and works with the proposed energy towers on levels that go beyond spatial integration into complex social and programmatic connections.
It’s sustainability dependent on adaptability at different scales; from intricate and sensitive changes to city-wide impacts. The site –through the user-undergoes a parallax as each user understands the site and their relationship and impact to it over time -making a smart city and requires a smart inhabitant.
Hybrid programmatic mixtures that introduce a contemporary lifestyle of co-existence within different user groups. It also introduces outdoor communal spaces that are not only at ground floor level but are peppered strategically within the range of types of living and working at higher levels –in the hotels, live/work units, offices and student accommodation. The urban components identity is robust enough to be read as a singular object and as something that when multiplied and edited makes a for complex spatial vision that is relevant to now and the future of Graz.
